The American artist Cy Twombly
passed away today in Rome. Most recently, Twombly produced the first
permanent installation by an American at the Louvre. The ceiling mural
spans the entire length and width of the Salle des Bronzes at the museum using strips of oil on canvas to adhere to the ceiling like wallpaper. Departing from his signature squiggles and lines, Twombly drew spheres of silver and gold along with the names of ancient Greek sculptors. Combined with the hypnotic deep blue sky, Twombly’s work is a fitting and appropriate contribution for the room of bronze sculpture, offering a lasting reminder of the artist’s long, brilliant career and contributions.
